In November of 2011, the category that allowed Canadians to sponsor their parents and grandparents to immigrate to Canada was suspended indefinitely. However, it is still possible to bring these family members to Canada on a new category called Super Visitor Visa. The Super Visitor Visa is valid for up to 10 years, allows for multiple-entry, and it is possible to stay up to two years per visit.
The sponsor must be able to prove that they are financially able to support the applicant fully, for the entire duration of their stay in Canada. Another requirement is that the applicant must have full private medical coverage for the duration of their stay.
This is the most suitable option for parents and grandparents who do not have travel restrictions, and do not plan to live in Canada permanently.
